The position of this house, on a platform high on the slopes of the hills around Muriwai, lends itself perfectly to the application of solar design principles. Large windows and sliding doors enable sun penetration in winter as well as glorious rural views right down to
Bethell’s Beach and the ocean beyond. In response to high wind exposure the shape of the house is streamlined and built using
lightweight concrete with high thermal insulation value. In addition it features double glazing, shading devices, solar water heating panels,
renewable materials and ‘environmental choice’ finishes. Rainwater is collected and wastewater disposal sustainably managed on site.
