Cornwallis Road

Two flat levels of land connected by a 5m slope determine the shape of the house. The aim is to be able to step out from the house on to each of the levels. The house opens up to the north (sun) and east (harbour views) with sheltered decks and terraces. The southern side consists of minor rooms and flights of stairs which combine to protect the living areas to the north from cold southern exposure. The passive solar design concept is complemented by high insulation, lightweight concrete panels as cladding, and double glazing. Solar water heating panels, the use of renewable materials and ‘environmental choice’ finishes, collection of rainwater and on-site management of wastewater all contribute to a high level of sustainability.
